Dear Parents, carers and members of the community,
Congratulations to all students on an awesome term and semester of learning, artistic and sporting achievements we are very proud of you! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all staff and volunteers for their hard work and parents for supporting our students with various activities throughout the term and semester. A warm welcome to all new students and families who joined the school this term, I sincerely hope that you are enjoying being at our school and embracing all the learning opportunities on offer.
It has been fantastic conducting Principal tours this term and introducing new and prospective students and families to Nirimba State Primary School. A reminder that enrolment packs for 2025 are available from the office and we will be commencing enrolment meetings at the beginning of September. If you have any questions or queries about enrolment, please contact the office on 5413 7777.
Unfortunately, we were not able to hold our Athletics Carnival this term, but I am looking forward to this whole-school event on Friday the 12th and Monday the 15th of July. We are also in conversations with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Stockland who will potentially be attending on the Monday and providing students and parents with a sausage sizzle on the day. This is part of a QPS community engagement strategy, so they are happy to have a chat to anyone on the day.
Lastly, a massive thank you to our amazing P&C committee who have worked tirelessly this semester in supporting through fundraising and participating in the decision-making processes of the school. The Winter Fair was very successful and a great event for the community to come together. At the recent P&C meeting it was decided that the Student Resource Scheme for 2025 has been frozen, meaning that there will not be an increase for next year. The Uniform Policy was also discussed, and it has been updated to be ratified at the next P&C meeting. You are encouraged to come along and be a part of the P&C.
Report cards will be distributed today. There will be another formal opportunity to meet with your child’s classroom teacher towards the end next term, however if you need to see your child’s teacher before Student Progress meetings, please email them to set up a mutually convenient time.
Thank you to all students and families for another great term at Nirimba State Primary School. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday period.
Yours in education

What a wonderful term we have had here at Nirimba State Primary School! I have had the privilege of reading many report cards and am impressed by the progress our students have been making in their learning. It has also been wonderful to read so many comments around how kind and caring our students are towards their peers. Well done to our students and their teachers for all of their efforts teaching and learning this semester. Reports are being distributed, via email, today to parents.
We have had so many events occur this term and our student leaders have done an amazing job stepping up and running different events for our community. Our ANZAC Day ceremony was the first large event they ran on their own and they did a wonderful job ensuring all students approached the ceremony with the respect that it deserved. It was also great to see so many students attend the Caloundra ANZAC Day March this year, which is always a highlight of our school calendar.
Our annual Book Fair was a hit with the community. As always, it encouraged all of our students to choose books they enjoy and delve further into reading. Thank you to the staff who set up the display and volunteered to run the fair. Huge thank you to all of our parents and community members who came along and purchased books! Your support has helped our school continue to build on our library collection.
Our students have been lucky enough to experience some excursions and incursions this term, with everyone having a very enjoyable time. Our Year 3 students attended Australia Zoo; Year 5 & 6 attended Life Education and visited Parliament House in Brisbane; Year 2 students visited Wildlife HQ; Prep – Year 2 students attended a Bravehearts performance, and our Preppies were lucky enough to have the Sunshine Coast Environmental Education Centre come and engage them in their learning. Our students certainly are very lucky here at Nirimba to have so many opportunities to engage in their learning.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy winter holiday break. I look forward to welcoming families back for Term 3 on Monday, 8th July.

Hello Nirimba Families,
Halfway through the year and what a whirlwind it has been. I’d just like to extend a massive thanks to all of my teams for all of the great work they do around the school.
This week we celebrated School Cleaners Day on Monday, with classes designing thank you cards and posters to pass on their thanks to our cleaning team who work diligently outside of school hours to keep our classrooms and facilities spick and span for everyone to enjoy.
Thanks to Mr Costa Dias, our Schools Officer for his constant work on our facilities and grounds here at the school. This term we’ve put in a lot of time to improving how we look after our ovals and gardens and they’re only going to get better through the year.
Thanks to Mr Micozzi for ensuring all of our computers, our ever-growing fleet of iPads, and everything else technical keeps running smoothy.
Thanks to our amazing Teacher Aide team including our relief TA’s that assist in classrooms and during break times. You are all so positive with such an excellent can-do attitude when it comes to assisting around the school and creating a positive learning environment for our students.
And last but certainly not least, thanks to Cheree and Jodi, our Administration Officers, for always having a smile and attending to the mountains of administration work that comes with keeping the school running. While we’re on a spree of thanking people, thanks to all of the parents and carers that drop in to the office to see us, whether it’s for business or just to have a chat or a joke – your positivity brightens our day.
Time for the less fun stuff. We’ll be sending out statements again this week – if there’s any charges showing for activities your children didn’t attend or participate in please bear with me while I work through reconciling them and removing charges for students who didn’t attend.
As always, if anyone would like to discuss their fees or arrange a payment plan please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at rodon65@eq.edu.au, via phone, or dropping into the office. I’m also more than happy to discuss anything regarding our facilities, including hire.
Cheers,

Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the end of a productive term, I wanted to share some of the exciting and diverse learning experiences our students have been engaged in. It's been a term full of exploration, creativity and hands-on activities that have enriched our curriculum and provided authentic learning opportunities.
Our youngest learners had a fantastic time during their incursion where the Sunshine Coast Environmental Centre came out. The Prep students through investigation and discussion practiced identifying and describing the observable properties of natural and man-made materials. As a final activity, students constructed their own windchime using natural materials. This helped them apply their findings from the program in a creative and practical way. In the digital realm, our Year 1 students were busy using Scratch to code story retells. This innovative approach not only enhanced their understanding of narratives but also introduced them to the basics of programming. Watching their stories come to life through coding was incredibly rewarding, showcasing their creativity and technological skills.
Our Year 2 students have been immersed in their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) unit, which resulted in a piece of media artwork created and an algorithm established! Students STEAM media artwork had to promote sustainable practices within our school, reinforcing our positive PBL processes and sustainable practices. Year 3 students enjoyed an unforgettable excursion to Australia Zoo. Students got to experience and explore life cycles and habitats first hand. Students explored all the areas and habitats within the Zoo, finishing at the Croc show in the famous ‘Crocoseum’. As the term finished, Year 3 students then created vehicles that were capable of transporting cargo in our MakerSpace. A full and busy term for our Year 2 and 3 students.
Creativity and engineering skills were on full display as Year 4 and 4/5A students designed and constructed mini putt putt courses. This project combined elements of design, mathematics, and physical education, as students worked collaboratively to create fun and challenging courses. The excitement and pride in their creations were evident as they shared and played on each other’s courses, even having some of our teaching and leadership staff having a go!
Our Year 6 students have been creating video interviews of staff members within our school. This activity not only honed their interviewing and filming skills but also fostered a deeper sense of community as they learned about the roles and experiences of our staff. Students learnt about what happens within our school and how different staff members impact the running and function of our school!
This term has been full of hard work and a variety of authentic learning experiences. Our students have shown tremendous growth, creativity and enthusiasm in all their tasks. I am incredibly proud of their achievements and grateful for the support of our dedicated teachers and staff who make these learning opportunities possible.
I’m looking forward to the semester ahead and all the rich learning experiences on the horizon!
Regards,
Corey Kolanowski

Athletics Day/s 2024
A reminder for families that our rescheduled Athletics Carnival will be taking place on Friday, 12th July and Monday, 15th July.
The Friday will just be for students born in 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012 and will run from 9:00am to approx. 12:45pm. These students will run their 200m and 800m races on that day.
Monday is then for the whole school and will run from 9:00am – 2:30pm. The day will start with 9 – 12 year old students running their sprint race heats and finals while all 5 – 8 year old students will do their junior field event rotations. Then at 11:30am, 9 – 12 year old students will participate in their field event rotations while the 5 – 8 year old students run their sprint races. At 1:45pm the day will begin to wrap up with upper school relay races and Nirimba’s famous Staff v Students v Parents relay race!
A reminder for families that we hold our Athletics Carnival across the road at the Sports Complex. Students are encouraged to wear house colours on the day and be as colourful as they please.
District Athletics
Due to the postponement of our school carnival with the fields being closed, there will be a very short turn around to the District Athletics Carnival. For any students who register qualifying times or distances at our school carnival, they will be invited to attend the Glasshouse District Carnival on Wednesday, 24th July and Thursday, 25th July.
Interschool Sport
Interschool Sport provides a great opportunity for our upper school students to challenge themselves and participate in sports against other schools in our sporting district. On the Fridays of Weeks 8, 9 and 10, we sent three soccer teams and two Netball teams to Glasshouse Mountains to participate in Interschool Soccer and Netball competitions. All five of our teams have had a great experience and have had an action packed three days where some of our students have played games non-stop. Across the three days, all the teams have won some games and lost some games but hopefully learnt some new skills that they can use to help them develop on the sporting field.
District Sports
A number of our Year 6 students have represented Glasshouse District throughout the Term:
- Harry (6A) played for the Glasshouse District Rugby League team at the Sunshine Coast Trials in early Term 2
- Evie (6A), Jordie (6B), Demi (6B), Finn (6A) Logan (6A), Rory (6B) and Harrison (6B) played in the Glasshouse District Football (Soccer) teams
- Finn (6A), Billy (6A), Rory (6B) and Sienna (4/5A) represented Glasshouse District at the Regional Cross Country Trials at Noosa in early June.
Semester One is a very busy time for representative school sport and 2024 has been Nirimba’s best year yet for our students! Well done to all the students who made representative teams in the first half of the year.
Oztag
Nirimba’s 2024 Oztag team continues to train before school in readiness for the All Schools Oztag Championships at the Sunshine Coast Stadium in the last week of July. Out of the 14 students in the team, only 3 of them had ever played Oztag before so our Year 6 students are doing a great job of learning a new sport in such a short amount of time. Mark Friday the 26th July, Saturday the 27th July and Sunday the 28th July in your calendars to come and support these awesome students at such a big sporting event.
Jump Rope for Heart
Every Monday and Thursday at first break, Mrs Williams runs a Skipping Club in the hall. Students have been busy learning and practising skipping skills, including the Basic Jump, Skier Jump and Criss Cross. Next term, participating students will be invited to join in a Jump Off Day, aiming to jump rope as much as we can to raise money for the Heart Foundation.
If your child would like to get involved in Jump Rope for Heart, you can register their participation at jumprope.org.au/parents and encourage them to attend skipping club each week (Monday for years 2-6, Thursday for Prep - 1).
More information about the program and our Jump Off Day will be provided to Skipping Club students next term.
In the meantime, grab that skipping rope and get jumping!

Prep News
This term, our prep students had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Bravehearts education session. Bravehearts is an organisation dedicated to educating children about personal safety through fun, engaging, and age-appropriate activities. Their sessions aim to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to recognise, react to, and report unsafe situations.
During the session, the students were introduced to Ditto, Bravehearts' friendly lion mascot, who guided them through important safety messages. With Ditto's help, the children learned about body ownership, understanding feelings, recognising safe and unsafe secrets, and identifying trusted adults they can turn to for help. These vital lessons were delivered through interactive storytelling, songs, and activities that kept the students captivated and eager to participate.
The session was a huge success, leaving the children not only more knowledgeable about personal safety but also thoroughly entertained. Teachers reported that the students were actively engaged throughout, with many expressing excitement about what they had learned. It was great to see our young prep’s empowered with essential life skills in such a positive and supportive environment.
This term, our Prep students delved into the fascinating world of materials and their properties during the "Mysterious Materials" science incursion. As part of their science unit, the incursion provided an interactive and hands-on learning experience that sparked curiosity and scientific thinking.
The session began with students exploring a variety of materials, examining their textures, strengths, and other properties. Through guided activities, they learned to ask insightful questions, such as "What is this material made of?" and "What are its properties?".
The highlight of the incursion was the creative project where students planned and crafted their own wind ornaments. Using the materials they had investigated, the young scientists applied their newfound knowledge to design and construct ornaments that could move with the breeze. This activity not only reinforced their understanding of material properties but also encouraged problem-solving and innovative thinking.

🚀 Year 1 Scientists Set Sail! 🚀
Ahoy, mateys! This term, Year 1 scientists have been diving into the wonders of materials and their properties. From testing waterproofing to measuring strength, these mini explorers have been on quite the adventure!
Their latest challenge? Crafting boats from all sorts of materials to see if they'll float and carry marbles. From plasticine vessels to aluminium foil fleets, their creations sailed through the test with flying colours!
Stay tuned for more scientific antics as these young researchers continue to rock the boat of exploration!
Year 2 News
This term, our Year 2 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Wildlife HQ. This hands-on learning experience allowed our young scientists to get up close and personal with a variety of animals, deepening their understanding of the fascinating stages of life. At the zoo, students observed different species firsthand. They were thrilled to see animals and learn how they grow and change. The knowledgeable zookeepers provided insightful information, turning the zoo into an interactive classroom where curiosity thrived.
The excursion not only reinforced classroom lessons but also sparked a sense of wonder and respect for wildlife. Students returned with a wealth of knowledge and a renewed enthusiasm for biological science. This exciting day at Wildlife HQ Zoo was an enriching experience that brought our learning to life in the most vivid and memorable way.
Year 3 News
With our science unit being all about living things and lifecycles we were lucky enough to start our term off with an excursion to Australia Zoo where we had a great introduction to the lifecycles of plants and animals. Did you know that out of 200 eggs laid from a crocodile only 1 will reach adulthood? CRIKEY that’s not many! All year three students walked their little legs off to see many animals from our country- Australia to the wider countries- Africa. A big thank you to our teachers for organising this excursion for us.
In Maths this term we heavily focused on fact families for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and how they connect. We expanded our knowledge and skills to complete word problems, understood multiple strategies for partitioning numbers to add and subtract and worked on representing multiplication with hands-on concrete materials.
English consisted of us having a blast with procedures. We loved explaining to our teachers Mr Roberts and Mrs Dodd, how to do something. Year 3’s wrote their procedures in their books and then used their iPads to video themselves re-enacting how to do something. Both classes wrote, shared and presented their procedures with fellow classmates in character. Embodying a character from the novel “Fantastic Mr Fox.”
Lastly, our term finished with a bang, doing all things Design Technology. Students thought outside the box and then used many a box (or container) to create a vehicle that could carry cargo. Classmates did lots of cutting, gluing, designing, and refining. Thank you, students and parents, for all of your wonderful work this semester. Bring on Term 3!
Year 4 News
This term, Year 4 students have been actively engaged in a variety of exciting and educational activities across different subjects.
In English, we explored a range of traditional stories with morals, and students demonstrated their creativity by writing their own original tale. To bring these stories to life, we crafted puppets and designed backdrops, turning our narratives into captivating movies using iMovie during our Visual Arts sessions.
Mathematics has been a journey of discovery and practical application. We tackled problems involving the conversion between different units of time and delved into the intriguing properties of odd and even numbers. Students also honed their skills in rounding and estimation to determine whether their calculations were reasonable. A highlight was using mathematical modelling to solve real-world financial problems, particularly in budgeting for party planning, which combined fun with learning essential life skills.
Our Science unit took us into the fascinating world of living and non-living organisms. Students investigated and compared the features of various animals, enriching their understanding of the diversity of life on Earth.
In Design Technology, creativity and sustainability came together as students planned, designed, and built their own Putt Putt Courses using recycled materials. This project not only emphasised innovative thinking and problem-solving but also highlighted the importance of recycling and environmental responsibility.
As we wrap up this term, we want to commend our Year 4 students for their hard work and enthusiasm. Have a wonderful and safe holiday break, and we look forward to more exciting learning adventures next term!

Your dream destination awaits you… 6A will show you the way!
Wow. What a term. Full of learning experiences each and every week. Our English focus this term was advertising in the media. Students learnt how using persuasive languages and techniques can influence an audience. They amalgamated their learning into a print media advertisement, which promoted a holiday destination of their choice.
First, students were introduced to language features such as evaluative language, emotive language, modal verbs and figurative language. Then students were shown techniques such as: repetition, rhetorical questions, ‘rule of three,’ themed voice narration and image cohesion. Lastly, students used Power Point to bring to life an advertisement using all their learnt skills, and wow what a finished product. Let the tourist expo begin!
I think it’s time for a holiday.
