Nirimba State Primary School Issue 2 2025
Principal News

Dear Parents, Carers and Members of the Community,
It has been a wonderful term of learning, sporting and artistic activities, which has led to a great start in 2025! Well done to all students for settling into their learning routines—there have been so many outstanding personal achievements this term that we are incredibly proud of. A special mention goes to all the Prep students for completing their first term of 'big school.' They are doing a fantastic job adapting to school life and embracing new learning opportunities.
This term, we were excited to introduce a range of new clubs, providing students with broader learning experiences beyond the classroom. These opportunities have been embraced enthusiastically by students and we look forward to seeing their continued growth and exploration in the coming terms.
As a school, we are focused on our ambitious strategic plan this year, which places a strong emphasis on teaching and learning practices. This includes the implementation of the Version 9 Australian Curriculum for English, introducing a new way of teaching reading, and embedding Universal Design Principals for Learning. Supporting this comprehensive teaching and learning agenda are initiatives centred on student and family support, including The Resilience Project, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and a range of student and family support programs.
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all staff for their dedication and hard work this term. Our amazing new staff members have also done a wonderful job settling in, building connections with students and becoming an integral part of the Nirimba SPS community. We also celebrate an exciting time ahead as Mrs. Ogden and Ms. McGill prepare for maternity leave after the first week back next term. We wish them all the best for a safe arrival of their babies and a cherished time with their families.
A big thank you to Mrs. McKenna and the Student Services team for organizing a brilliant PBL Rewards Day. All students had a fantastic time celebrating their achievements and efforts throughout the term.
Due to unfortunate weather conditions at the end of this term, we have had to postpone a number of sporting events, including one of my favourite whole-school events—the annual cross-country carnival. We are now planning to hold this event on Wednesday, 23rd April. Fingers crossed for better weather after the holidays!
I would like to congratulate the new P&C Executive Team on their appointments. The team is already hard at work planning the upcoming Winter Fair, along with other exciting events and initiatives for the remainder of the year. If you’d like to get involved and support the fantastic work of the P&C, please reach out via email at nirimbapandc@outlook.com.
A special thank you goes to Mr. Cam McNamara, who has done a remarkable job assisting with afternoon pickups. We are seeking volunteers to continue this vital work, so if you can spare 20 minutes in the afternoon, please contact the P&C Committee or email admin@nirimbass.eq.edu.au.
Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that school tours will begin next term. Parents and carers are encouraged to book a time through the school office to learn more about our programs, facilities, and community.
On behalf of the school, I wish you and your families a wonderful holiday period. We look forward to seeing you all back in Term 2 for another exciting term of learning and whole-school events.
Kind regards,
Steven Moore

Deputy Principal

What a busy end to Term 1! Despite the weather over the last couple of weeks, our students have engaged in a wide variety of activities. Our Prep to Year 3 students finished their swimming program, which is always a very important part of our Physical Education curriculum delivery, especially as we live on the Sunshine Coast with all of our lovely beaches. Our Year 3 and 5 students participated in NAPLAN, demonstrating their knowledge and skills across English, Literacy and Mathematics. A group of Year 4-6 students participated in the Jack Reed football program, supporting them to learn teamwork skills and fostering positive peer relationships.
Our students all had huge smiles at the annual Easter Hat Parade on Monday morning – it’s always such a fun morning with students parading around the hall and showing off their fantastic creations. While our Cross Country and Year 2 park excursions were postponed due to the weather, ending the term with our PBL Rewards Day is always a wonderful celebration of our students’ behaviour.
Our teaching teams have been hard at work over the last fortnight working together within their cohorts to plan for curriculum delivery in Term 2. The rollout of Version 9 of the Curriculum in English is proving to offer some engaging and exciting opportunities for our students learning. I’m looking forward to continuing to see their academic growth over the next term.
We are holding our first round of student progress meetings in Week 2 next term. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their class teacher. Due to some staffing changes and planned leave in Term 2, some class teachers have already hosted student progress meetings and I thank those parents attending to discuss their child’s progress.
Our P&C held their Annual General Meeting last week and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Executive Committee for their dedication and support of Nirimba State Primary School. Welcome to the new Executive Committee and I am looking forward to working with you over the coming year. Our P&C are a dedicated group of volunteers who organise a wide variety of events and fundraising opportunities to support our students. I encourage all of our parents to reach out to the P&C if they are able to volunteer their time. Many hands make light work!
Finally, I would like to wish all of our families a safe and happy Easter Holiday Break. See you all when Term 2 begins on Tuesday, 22nd April.
Yours in Education,
Elise Maguire

Business Manager
Hello Nirimba Families,
It’s been a wild ten weeks and now it’s time for all of our students to take a well-earned break before coming back for an even wilder 10 weeks in Term 2 – we’ve got consent requests and invoices going out for plenty of incursions and excursions so look out for those.
Just a reminder that your 2025 Student Resource Scheme invoices request half-payment ($125.00 for Prep, $137.50 for Year 1-6) by the end of Term 1. Please ensure this has been actioned as we’ll be sending out reminders to all families. Thanks to all families that have paid these already.
If anyone has any queries on what is included in the 2025 SRS please don’t hesitate to contact me and I can send a detailed pricing breakdown.
Some families also have outstanding 2024 fees, which will remain on your account until paid.
As always, if anyone would like to discuss their fees or arrange a payment plan please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at rodon65@eq.edu.au, 5413 7777, or dropping into the office. I’m also more than happy to discuss anything regarding our facilities, including hire.
Cheers,
Ryan O’Donnell

Student Services

This term has flown by and it's hard to believe we are already approaching the Easter break. The Student Services Team has been busy introducing The Resilience Project to our students, consistently working through our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus and rewarding students for their hard work. We celebrated with the opening of the Burra Bucks Shop for 2025 and enjoyed the PBL Rewards Day, even in the rain!
Our students have been working incredibly hard in many areas and our teachers are doing a fantastic job of acknowledging their efforts. As the HOD of Student Services, I closely monitor school-wide recognition data and I’m proud to share that, on average, we acknowledge our students with a 12:1 ratio. This ratio is based on positive postcards, Student of the Week awards and Burra Bucks tracking, not even counting the verbal praise students receive. Our students thrive on positive reinforcement and it's evident here at Nirimba State Primary School.
This term, we also welcomed Jack Reed from the Brisbane Broncos back to our school to support students with teamwork, discipline and positive behaviour. The students absolutely love working with Jack, and we look forward to continuing this partnership in Term 2. Additionally, Mr. Perrin has been working with students on following instructions through cabinetry projects and they enjoyed seeing their finished products.
Looking ahead to next term, we are excited to host our first parent information session with a guest speaker from Sunshine Coast University and our school-based psychologist, Clare Farley. They will be sharing valuable insights on understanding anxiety at school.
The Student Services Team wish all our amazing families a safe and happy Easter break. See you back in time for our Anzac Day Parade at 9am on Thursday 24th April.

Curriculum News
Over the course of Term 1, all students from Prep to Year 6 have been engaging with the updated curriculum through the implementation of the Australian Curriculum Version 9 in English and Mathematics. In English, students have demonstrated their speaking and listening skills by creating podcasts, YouTube reviews, show-and-shares, and narrative reviews, just to name a few! With the curriculum update, our staff have modified and enhanced units to engage learners with more current and relevant content.
Term 1 also marks the administration of NAPLAN for Years 3 and 5. Students participated in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language, and Numeracy assessments. All students should be commended for their participation and effort throughout the testing period. A special thanks goes to the PCYC for providing a morning tea to help fuel students’ brains during the testing window.
Teachers are now preparing for student progress meetings, which will take place in Weeks 1 and 2 of next term. Our Student Progress Meeting evening will be held on Tuesday, 29 April 2025, with most staff available to discuss academic achievement with families. Please ensure you book a session with your child’s teacher using the link below. The link will close at the end of the holidays! https://nirimbastateps.schoolzineplus.com/view-session/21
Term 2 offers a range of exciting learning opportunities, including Science transition days at Baringa State High School, excursions to Australia Zoo, and Prep Science incursions. We look forward to welcoming our learners back after the holidays and continuing this learning adventure!

Inclusion News
Autism Awareness Month at Nirimba State Primary School
April is Autism Awareness Month, a time for us all to reflect on the importance of understanding and accepting neurodiversity within our community. At Nirimba State Primary School, we are proud of the efforts we make every day to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, including those with autism.
We believe that every child is unique, with individual strengths, challenges and perspectives. That's why we work hard to ensure that all students, regardless of their neurodiversity, are embraced, celebrated and fully included in our school community. Through ongoing education, awareness and open discussions, we aim to reduce stigma, encourage empathy and highlight the value of diversity in all its forms.
At Nirimba, we recognise the importance of employing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure that all students have equal access to learning. By offering multiple means of engagement, representation and expression, we tailor our teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of every learner. This approach allows students with autism, as well as all others, to thrive in an environment where their strengths and needs are understood and respected.
We also offer social-emotional learning groups to support the development of vital skills like emotional regulation, communication and social interaction. These groups provide a safe space for students to practice and develop their social skills, build relationships and learn how to manage their emotions in a positive and supportive environment.
Additionally, Nirimba State Primary School has a close working relationship with Autism Queensland. Through this partnership, we have access to invaluable resources, professional development opportunities and expert guidance. This collaboration ensures that our teaching staff are equipped with the latest evidence-based strategies to support students with autism in a way that is tailored to their individual needs.
During Autism Awareness Month, Nirimba State Primary School is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We have arranged several engaging activities and learning opportunities for students and staff to deepen their understanding of ASD and to promote kindness, respect, and inclusion. These initiatives are designed to help foster an environment where everyone feels safe, valued and understood.
Our commitment to neurodiversity goes beyond just one month; it’s a year-round effort to build a school culture that truly celebrates diversity and supports all learners in achieving their fullest potential. We encourage students, staff, and families to join us in our commitment to ensuring that State Primary School remains a welcoming place for everyone, where understanding and acceptance thrive. Please join us in our whole school Wednesday 30th April celebrations where we’ll come together to…
Together, let’s continue to learn, grow, and advocate for a world where neurodiversity is celebrated and all individuals are respected for who they are.
Happy Autism Awareness Month!
We look forward to seeing you in term!

Guidance Officer

As we wrap up Term 1, it's hard to believe how quickly the last 10 weeks have flown by. It's been a busy term and it has been wonderful to see our students actively engaging in learning and participating in a variety of clubs, activities and events across the school. I hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break and has the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends.
Looking ahead to Term 2, I am excited to celebrate Guidance Week during Week 2 and 3 (28th April to the 9th May). This special week provides an opportunity for staff, students and parents to acknowledge the significant contributions of Guidance Officers in schools. At Nirimba State Primary School, I am fortunate to work in a school where the role of the Guidance Officer is highly valued and an integral part of student support. Guidance Officers are actively involved in developing support and wellbeing programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of students in consultation with teachers and administration staff. From academic support to personal challenges, family matters and mental health, Guidance Officers play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing and success of students.
Guidance Week is not only a time to celebrate the work of Guidance Officers in schools, but also a time to recognise the collaborative efforts of staff, families and external services who support our students in achieving the best possible educational outcomes.
Wishing everyone a restful and enjoyable holiday, and I look forward to seeing you after the holidays.
Take care,
Michelle Sinclair

Sustainability Club
🌱 Sustainability Club Update! 🍅🌽🔋
Our Sustainability Club has been buzzing with activity! We’ve been busy picking and tasting delicious homegrown tomatoes, sowing seeds and watching them sprout into new life. It’s been amazing to see our garden flourish!
Our Prep students have also been exploring Life and Living by observing corn grow from a tiny seed to a seedling and watching lettuce take root and thrive. It’s been a fantastic hands-on way to learn about plant life cycles!
We also had an exciting visit from the Battery Recycling Show, where students learned all about responsible battery disposal through a fun and interactive performance. It was a great way to understand how small actions can make a big impact on our planet!
Stay tuned for more green adventures! 🌎♻️

Sports
Cross Country
Hopefully by now, everyone is aware of the new date that has been set for our 2025 Cross Country Carnival. Wednesday the 23rd of April (first week back after the holidays) is the new date and we hope to see as many parents and family members attend the day as possible. The race schedule and plan for the day will remain exactly the same as has been communicated previously to families.
School Swimming
School swimming has come and gone for our Year 1 – 3 students for 2025. A big thank you to all Nirimba students and families for ensuring all the students were given the chance to develop and extend their swimming skills and abilities. It was so pleasing and rewarding to see the students grow in confidence and continue to develop and refine their stroke techniques over the five weeks.
Not only did the students do a wonderful job in the water but they also set a wonderful example for our school. The staff at the pool repeatedly said to me how they love working with such a lovely bunch of kids. WELL DONE NIRIMBA!!!
The following students were also selected to attend our school swimming trials in Term 4 where they will aim to register times to make them a part of our school team in 2026:
- 8 Year Girls: Freya (3C), Lana (3D), Leila (3D), Jaida (2A), Heidi (2A), Paige (3B), Ivy (3A)
- 8 Year Boys: Jax (2D), Levi (2E), Hayden (3D), Ari (2B), Dion (2C), Finn (2C)
- 9 Year Girls: Chloe (3D), Harper (3A), Emily (3A), Chelsea (3B), Kiki (3B)
- 9 Year Boys: Jameson (3D)
Interschool Sport
Unfortunately, the weather has not been kind this year so far in regards to Interschool Sport. Both days of Interschool Sport Softball were washed out this term. All five of our Softball teams did a great job learning a new sport in preparation for Interschool Sport and it was sad that they didn’t get a chance to showcase their new skills. Any families who had already paid this invoice will have it credited back onto your school accounts.
Interschool Sport will be back in Term 2 with Netball and Football (Soccer) being the two sports on offer.
District Sports
Our upper school students have continued to have success in being selected into Glasshouse District sporting teams as the term has gone on.
- Savannah D (6A) was selected in the Glasshouse District 12 Years Girls Football team.
- Savannah was also selected in the Glasshouse District 12 Years Girls Touch team.
- Savanah K (6B) was selected in the Glasshouse District 12 Years Girls Touch team.
- Ella P (5C) was selected as a shadow player in the Glasshouse District 12 Years Girls Touch team.
- Rhythm (5C) was selected in the Glasshouse District 11 Years Boys Rugby League team.
Just more Nirimba students excelling on the sporting field this year and I’m sure they won’t be the last ones selected in other teams as the year goes on.
Term 2 Sport at Nirimba
As well as Interschool Sport next Term, a couple of other sports programs will commence. The beginning of Term 2 will see our representative Oztag team and our representative Netball team selected. These two teams will be made up of selected students who will represent Nirimba at some major sporting carnivals later in the year. These teams will begin training in early Term 2 and selected students in the Oztag team will train once a week before school. More information will be passed on to selected students and their families in early Term 2.
Sport Signs
For the past few months, I have had the pleasure of consulting with Mack Muckan (father of Isobel in 3B) around the design of some new sports/house signs to go up in the Hall. Mack, and the Muckan family, were instrumental when our school first opened in 2022 in allowing us to use traditional Aboriginal words in the naming of our sports houses. Mack once again offered up his time when I contacted him and came up with some eye-catching designs to match the traditional words of our houses of wind, fire, earth and water. The new signs will go up in the hall in early Term 2. A massive thanks to Mack for his time and effort!
Arts
For this newsletter we would like to thank all our students in the ‘Little Mermaid Musical’ for their continued dedication and effort every week showing up to rehearsals. Especially our new Ariel; Mia Robinson for taking on your part with continued dedication and learning your lines so quickly, Harper Nga; for taking on the role of our Mersister. Great effort to all the students who re-auditioned for Ariel, Tara Williams and I were so impressed with your auditions and growth from last year.
Thank you to our parent helpers Natalie Dunstan, coming almost every week to help make props and sets; Kylie Brannen and Kaitlin Andison for your great work sourcing sponsors and fundraising for the musical; Finally, Megan Dive, our costume director for all your work sewing and creating our beautiful costumes.
We are still looking for extra parent helpers to assist our current volunteers and make the musical great! Please contact me if you are interested in assisting our musical: Semur1@eq.edu.au

Japanese
This newsletter, our Japanese highlights come from Prep and Year 6. Preps have been preparing for Japanese week by learning a new song in Japanese. The song is titled ‘こぶた、たぬき、きつね、ねこ’. In class this week, the Preps have done a great job with their first おりがみ, making both a きつね and ねこ from the song. We were so impressed by how independently they were able to do this. Students in Year 6 have consolidated their knowledge to produce self-introductions in Japanese, including a range of information. It is fantastic to see students showcasing their ability to use their speaking skills in Japanese.
Phrases for this newsletter:
こぶた (kobuta) Piglet

Prep
As we come to the end of our first term, it is with great pride and joy that we reflect on the incredible journey our little learners have embarked upon.
Our Preps have flourished in their new environment, making friends, learning new skills and building the foundations for a lifetime of learning. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of them and the progress they have made in such a short time.
One of the highlights of this term has been our focus on retelling stories. We have been delving into a variety of stories, exploring characters, events, likes, dislikes and our personal connection to the story. Our little learners have been captivated by these stories and have shown great enthusiasm in retelling them in fun and creative ways. In Mathematics lessons, students enjoyed collecting data from each other regarding their preferences on fruit and then collating this to further their decision making.
Well done Preppies!!!!!!
Year 1
This week, Year 1 students have been presenting their work. They chose a familiar character from a story we've read this term. In their presentations, students focused on speaking clearly, sharing details about their character and retelling key events from the story. Year 1 students showed great courage and did an outstanding job with their presentations!

Year 2
Wow! What a fantastic first term we have had in Year 2! The students have been engaged, curious and eager to learn across all subject areas. Here’s a look at some of the exciting things we’ve been up to:
Mathematics
This term, we have been exploring location and direction. The students have enjoyed using maps to navigate and give directions, helping them develop spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.
English
Our budding speakers impressed us with their amazing character preference speeches! They confidently used presentation techniques to engage their audience—building fantastic communication and public speaking skills.
Science
In Science, we have been exploring Earth’s resources, examining how we use them and discovering ways to conserve them for the future. As part of our learning, we went on water walks around the school, observing how we use water and other natural resources in our daily activities. Students also developed Science Talks, showcasing their knowledge, creativity, and communication skills.
HASS
We have been investigating places on a local and national scale. We explored states, territories, and continents, building our knowledge of Australia and the world.
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)
Students were introduced to the basics of algorithms—learning how to create step-by-step instructions to solve problems in fun and interactive ways. Year 3
English:
Year 3 students have been working hard to finalise their assessment tasks, honing their speaking skills by practising features of voice. Their expression and clarity are truly unmatched!
Mathematics:
We have been busy collecting, sorting and analysing data representations to uncover patterns and information. Comparing column graphs and pictographs has helped us develop a deeper understanding of how data can be visually represented.
Science:
Our chrysalis experience was a truly unforgettable moment! We watched in awe as all our chrysalises emerged right before our eyes in the classroom. After observing them for a few days, we released them into the wild, where they could thrive in their natural habitat.
HASS:
This term, we explored how different communities celebrate special occasions. We had the opportunity to celebrate St Patrick's Day together and are looking forward to the upcoming Easter festivities.
It has been a fantastic start to Year 3 with this wonderful group of students. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break before we dive into an exciting and busy Term 2.
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!

Year 4
4A and 4B students have started the year impressively, composing and recording sensational reviews of the short animated films ‘The Present’ and ‘Lou’. In Mathematics, they have explored symmetry, creating their own mesmerising patterns and also collecting, collating and interpreting data using a digital platform.
In other learning areas, we have investigated rules and laws, James Cook explorations, identifying stereotypes and modified the game of handball to make it inclusive. Students were able to make real life connections with weathering and erosion when Cyclone Alfred visited South East Queensland beaches. They have definitely earned a holiday!
Next term will see our classes composing information reports, creating their own pinball machines, exploring human impacts on landscapes through art and understanding self-protection strategies both online and in the ‘real world’. Maths will include planning a pizza party to learn financial modelling along with applying addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. All that times table practice for homework will come in handy!
4/5A
What a busy Term we have had in 4/5A! Students have done a fantastic job with all of their spoken reviews and should be proud of their efforts. We enjoyed having Mr Moore visit our class to do some spelling and shared reading.
Next term we look forward to exploring and creating informative texts. We will be integrating this with HASS - Grade 4 students focusing on Celebrations around the World, while Grade 5 students will be learning all about Australia’s Gold Rush History.
Maths will include financial modelling and problem solving along with applying addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, so keep up with that Times Table practice! Another big focus will be time, with Grade 4 students converting between units of time, and Grade 5 students converting between 12 and 24 hour time, so please practice telling the time over the holidays if your child still struggles with this.
Next term students will also be creating their own pinball machines, exploring human impacts on landscapes through art and understanding self-protection strategies both online and in the ‘real world’. Have a wonderful holiday!

Year 5
What a fantastic few weeks of learning it has been for our Year 5 students! They have been busy developing their data collection and recording skills, using a variety of apps to create clear and informative graphs. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they analyse and interpret different sets of data.
In literacy, students have completed their exciting podcast projects and sharing their thoughts on books they found engaging. It has been great to hear them articulate their opinions, make connections and provide recommendations—future book critics in the making!
Our Science unit has sparked incredible enthusiasm, particularly as we’ve been exploring the wonders of the solar system. Students have been amazed to learn how space exploration has shaped the technology we use today. From GPS to medical advancements, space science is truly part of our everyday lives. The creativity shown in their homework projects has been outstanding, with some impressive PowerPoint presentations and dioramas bringing the solar system to life!
Well done to all our Year 5 students for their hard work and enthusiasm. We look forward to another exciting term of learning!

Year 6
That’s a wrap! Term 1 has flown by, and what a great start to the year it’s been! Our classrooms have been buzzing with energy as students dived into a range of hands-on activities, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. We’re proud of the fantastic achievements so far and can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
Exploring the Solar System and Our Environment:
This term, our students have been on an exciting journey of discovery through both Science and HASS. In Science, we’ve ventured into space, investigating the fascinating features of the planets in our solar system and examining how scientific advancements have impacted lives and addressed challenges. Students have creatively showcased their ideas through hands-on art projects and an engaging Minecraft Education challenge, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm along the way.
Meanwhile, in HASS, we’ve been exploring the relationship between people and the environment. Students have investigated how human activities and natural features influence each other, identifying the characteristics of different places and examining how climates shape them. They took on the challenge of conducting independent research to complete case studies on Australian locations vastly different from the Sunshine Coast.
We’re incredibly proud of how students have embraced these learning opportunities. Be sure to ask your child to share what they’ve discovered! Developing independent research skills will remain a key focus throughout the year as we prepare for high school.
Developing Exceptional Speaking and Listening Skills and Creating Data Displays:
In English, students presented their ideas on a text of their choice, practicing tone, pitch, pace and volume to emphasize key points. They also explored how facial expressions and gestures can enhance their presentations. Students critically analysed the texts, identifying central themes, text structure and the language features used by authors to create meaning.
In Mathematics, students surveyed their classmates and displayed the data on their iPads to explore various types of graphs. We also examined how the media can use statistics to mislead audiences in advertising. Additionally, we explored how to read different number lines and plot points on Cartesian planes.
We wish all our students and families a happy and safe holiday break! See you in Term 2!
