Nirimba State Primary School Issue 3 2025
Principal News

Dear Parents, Carers and Members of the Community,
Halfway through the term already! The learning that is occurring in classrooms is amazing. At the start of this year, we implemented the new approach to teaching spelling and reading and we are already seeing amazing results and student confidence of students increasing. I had the pleasure of visiting Prep classrooms recently and they have already started writing and spelling words independently and it is only Term 2!
We have a number of school events and activities happening in the second half of the term including a number of incursions and events with the Athletics carnival occurring on the 16th and 17th of June. The Athletics carnivals are always a fun school event and we look forward to welcoming parents and carers to cheer on their children.
The P&C Executive committee, subcommittees and volunteers have been working tirelessly to deliver this year’s Winter Festival. I know that they have organised some great entertainment additions which is very exciting. The Winter Festival is held on school grounds on Friday the 30th of May and starts at 10am. We look forward to welcoming you to this event soon. On behalf of the school, I would like to extend a massive thanks to the P&C team for all of their hard work!
By now many of you would be aware that Mrs Maguire has been successful in winning the permanent principal position at Sunshine Beach State School. While I am super proud and happy for her, I am saddened by her departure as she had played such an important role in establishing our wonderful school. She will be missed by her colleagues. I am currently working with regional HR in filling our Deputy Principal vacancy from the start of next term.
We are noticing a marked increase in parents and carers breaching the Parent and Community Code of Conduct when they interact with school staff. Unfortunately, I need to remind parents and carers of the following:
§ You need to book an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher or a member of the leadership team. Don’t expect to be seen straight away if you present outside your child’s classroom or at the office in the morning without having booked an appointment.
§ Allow up to 48 hours for a response to your email. If you send an email over the weekend, please don’t expect a response first thing on Monday morning.
§ Most importantly, as adults it is expected that you model appropriate behaviour and language when on school grounds. The way in which some parents and carers behave and speak with my school staff when they can’t be seen straight away or can’t get something immediately is completely unacceptable.
Please find a copy of the Parent and Community Code of Conduct attached clearly detailing the expected behaviours of parents and other visitors to the school.

Deputy Principal

We are now halfway through our second term of 2025 and time is flying by! Our students are doing an amazing job demonstrating all of their learning so far. It is a very busy time within our classrooms as assessment pieces are being started and teachers will be busy writing report cards over the coming weeks. I have had the privilege of visiting many classrooms over the last couple of weeks and it is amazing how well our students can articulate what they are learning and what their next steps for improvement are. I would like to commend all of our students for the excellent effort they are putting into their learning – well done!
We have lots of upcoming events over the next few weeks, including many sporting opportunities for our students. Our annual Athletics Days are coming up quickly and these are always fantastic events in the last few weeks of Term 2. The annual Baringa State Secondary College Arts Transition program will be held at the college early Term 3. High performing students from Year 5 & 6 are invited to attend in the areas of Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Singing, Strings and Concert Band. The 3 day program culminates in a performance which is always very entertaining! Congratulations to the students who have been nominated to attend.
One of our favourite annual events is our Under 8’s Day, which is still a little while away but an important one to add to your calendars. All of our Prep 2026 families are invited to attend our Under 8’s day on the 2nd September with their parent or guardian. Our Prep – Year 2 classes will all be involved and it is a wonderful morning full of fun activities for our littlest people. If you are considering enrolling at Nirimba for Prep in 2026, please phone the school office on 5413 7777 to be added to our contact list. Enrolment packs will be available early Term 3.
Finally, the P&C’s Winter Fair is quickly approaching and will be held on Friday 30th May. This is always a fun family day out with lots to do for the whole family. If you are able to volunteer for a small part of the day, the P&C would appreciate it. Many hands make light work and all proceeds raised from the Winter Fair go straight back into the school and your children.
Have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see you at the Winter Fair next Friday.

Hello Nirimba Families,
We’re into the thick of things now with excursions and incursions happening regularly, which means there’s plenty of correspondence, consent requests, invoices and everything else coming out to families. If you have any queries regarding these please reach out to your teacher for assistance and information, noting that anything specifically finance related can be directed at me and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
With all these events happening it may mean you’ll continue to see charges for excursions and events remain on your QParents/statements that don’t belong there – I’ll be working through excursion reconciliations as time permits but rest assured if your child did not attend these events that you will receive a credit down the line.
Financial statements will also be coming out to all families on a regular basis – please note these are automated and will come to all families who have any balance, positive or negative. If you’re unsure of a charge or credit sitting there please respond via return email and we can take a look.
We had an influx of payments after the last wave, but just a reminder that 50% of your 2025 SRS fees were due at the end of Term 1. Camp information and invoices have also come out for Year 4, 5, and 6 students, and it’s worth noting that students will be unable to attend camp unless SRS is paid or you have an active payment plan with us.
As always, if anyone would like to discuss student fees or arrange a payment plan please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at rodon65@eq.edu.au, 5413 7777, or dropping into the office. I’m also more than happy to discuss anything regarding our facilities, including hire.
Cheers,
Ryan O’Donnell

Head of Inclusion

Show your true colours!
Students and staff came together on the 30th of April to recognise our continued commitment to Inclusion at Nirimba. It was wonderful to see everyone in their brightest colours and participating in activities that spread awareness and understanding.
Autism is a lifelong way of experiencing and interacting with the world that affects how people think and interact with the world. Every autistic person is unique and brings valuable strengths to our community.
The Show Your True Colours campaign encourages understanding, inclusion, and support for people with autism so everyone can feel welcome and thrive at school and beyond.
Students and parents enjoyed arriving under the rainbow arches and participating in activities throughout the day in their classrooms.

Building Resilience at Nirimba: The Resilience Project
At Nirimba State Primary School, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing of every student. That’s why we’re proud to be part of The Resilience Project, a program designed to help children develop lifelong skills in emotional literacy and mental wellbeing.
Through engaging lessons and classroom activities, students are learning to build resilience by focusing on three key pillars: Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). These simple, evidence-based strategies empower our students to better manage challenges, improve their relationships and strengthen their sense of self.
We encourage families to continue the conversation at home. Ask your child about what they’ve learned in their Resilience Project (TRP) sessions, and explore ways you can practice gratitude, empathy and mindfulness together.
Together, we’re helping our children grow into resilient, caring and confident individuals.

Supporting Positive Growth: Jack Reed Broncos Program
The Student Services Team is also thrilled to support the Jack Reed Broncos Program here at Nirimba State Primary School. This initiative, led by former NRL player Jack Reed in partnership with the Brisbane Broncos, focuses on building confidence, respect and teamwork among our students.
Delivered through dynamic workshops and interactive sessions, the program helps students develop leadership skills, emotional regulation and a sense of community belonging. Jack’s engaging approach and real-life experience inspire our students to set goals, embrace challenges and make positive choices in and out of the classroom. We have now completed five sessions with some students across Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 and they thoroughly loved this time.
We are so very grateful for the opportunity to host this valuable program, which complements our whole-school focus on wellbeing and personal development. Thanks Jack!

Head of Department - Curriculum

Term 2 has been action-packed, with Student Progress Meetings taking place at the start of the term. Teachers held over 580 meetings across Weeks 1 and 2, smashing previous benchmarks from past years. They thoroughly enjoyed sharing students' academic progress and meeting many parents during this time.
This term in Teaching and Learning, we are focusing on the purposeful use of ICT (iPads) and the importance of high-quality bookwork. At Nirimba State Primary School, we value excellence and consistency in bookwork. Our high expectations ensure that students focus on quality at all times, fostering pride in everything they do—both in the classroom and beyond. We recognise our responsibility to educate students in mastering handwriting skills, as outlined in the Australian Curriculum, and to support them in presenting their work to a high standard.
When it comes to using iPads in the classroom, teachers are encouraged to consider how technology can enhance student learning and add value to the overall learning experience. Students are showcasing their critical and creative thinking skills by transforming simple informative texts into interactive multimodal pieces that incorporate student voice and artwork.
Teachers are now preparing for reporting, with end-of-semester report cards to be provided in the final week of this term. Please take the time to celebrate your child’s successes and continue to be an active participant in their learning journey.

Japanese
みなさん、こんにちは!
This newsletter, our Japanese highlights come from most year levels.
Prep students have been doing a wonderful job learning how to say and write their Japanese numbers, through song, action and play. Students have been using playdough mats to practice the formation of their Japanese numbers. If you have a child in Prep, ask them to count (or sing!) 1-10 in Japanese 😊
Whilst we head into Winter, Japan is enjoying Spring. Spring in Japan is synonymous with さくら which cover the trees in a blanket of light pink blossoms from late March to mid May, depending on the area. Students in Year 2 and 5 learnt about the importance of さくらto Japanese people and the はなみ celebrations that take place while they are in bloom. Year 2 students created their own さくら branches, taking pride in their artwork. Year 5s created seasonal themed はいく.
Also during Spring, a very important festival takes place… こどものひ。Our Year 1, Year 4 and Year 6 students learned about this important festival, feeling slightly envious that they don’t have one like this in Australia. They learned about the symbols of the こい and かぶと and how these symbolise strength and good health. Families hope for their children to grow to be strong and healthy on this day. Students in Year 4 created an origami かぶと contributing to a shared こいdisplay outside the Japanese room. Students in Year 1 and 6 created their ownこい to celebrate the festival.
よくできました、Nirimba students!
Phrases for this newsletter:
みなさん、こんにちは (minasan, konnichiwa) Hello, Everyone!
さくら (sakura) Cherry blossoms
はなみ (hanami) Flower Viewing Festival
こどものひ Children’s Day
こい Carp
かぶと Samurai Helmet
はいくHaiku
よくできました (yokudekimashita) Well done!

Sustainability Club
Hello families!
We’ve had a wonderful (and a bit muddy!) term in the Sustainability Garden Club and we’re thrilled to share what we’ve been up to, along with some exciting news for the future!
Every club day, we love helping out in our beautiful garden space. It’s always a highlight of our week where we learn about nature, get our hands dirty and work together to make our school more sustainable.
With all the recent rain, we haven’t had to water as often but some of our plants haven’t been as happy with the extra water! A few of our seedlings became waterlogged and sadly didn’t survive. Because of this, we’ve spent time weeding and tidying the garden beds making sure they’re ready for new planting.
We’ve also been focusing on improving our composting system at school. Every class is encouraged to use our compost caddies daily to collect fruit scraps and Student Council members then empty these into the garden tumbler. This has been a great success and has even produced some amazing “poo juice” (liquid compost) to feed our plants naturally!
Some of the things we’re growing right now include broccoli from seed, which is coming along nicely and snow peas, which we’ve loved watching sprout and tasting fresh from the vine!
Even more exciting news – we recently received a grant to expand our sustainability area! Thanks to this funding, we’ll soon be welcoming chooks (chickens) to our garden and creating a brand new outdoor learning classroom. We are so excited about the opportunities this will bring. We can’t wait to start having our Science lessons outside, right in the heart of the environment we’re learning about.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we grow our garden and our sustainability efforts. There’s so much more to come!
Warm green wishes,
The Sustainability Garden Club Team
Mrs Dodd and Ms Mortimer
Arts Club
The Visual Arts Club has been buzzing with creativity and artistic exploration! Our Prep–2 and Year 3–4 students have been embracing their artistic freedom, choosing from a wide range of mediums including watercolour, oil pastels, drawing pencils and charcoal. It’s been inspiring to see their unique ideas come to life through their chosen materials. Meanwhile, our talented Year 5–6 students have been rising to Mrs Newbery’s latest challenge—sketching realistic portraits of people and animals using charcoal. They’ve been focusing closely on detail and proportion, producing some truly impressive work. The art room is alive with imagination and growing skill!

Prep News
In the first weeks of Term 2, Prep students have been immersed in hands-on and engaging learning experiences.
In English, students have been developing their writing skills by constructing simple sentences and putting their ideas into words. They’ve enjoyed exploring sentence building through games and group activities while also practising reading aloud and discussing stories to build comprehension and a love for books!
In Maths, students are making connections between number names, numeracy, and quantities. They’re using strategies like counting and subitising to solve everyday problems, such as adding to and taking away from groups of up to 10. This practical approach helps them build confidence with numbers.
In Science, our young learners are exploring different materials to discover their properties. Through hands-on experiments, they’ve started investigating which materials are waterproof and discussing why some are more suitable for specific uses. They’re learning to describe their observations using scientific language and share their discoveries with the class.
A highlight so far has been our Mother’s Day picnic, where students had a wonderful time celebrating with their loved ones. It’s been a busy and exciting start to the term in Prep!

Year 1 News
Year 1 Investigates the World Through Information Reports
This term, our Year 1 students have been exploring a range of fascinating topics as part of their English focus on information reports. They’ve been learning to identify and apply key features of this text type, such as writing clear and simple sentences, using topic-specific vocabulary, and including relevant images to support their information.
Each week, students have researched and written about a new topic, developing both their writing skills and content knowledge. Their reports have been shared in various formats, including Seesaw posts, posters and Keynote presentations. So far, they’ve investigated wombats, monster trucks, sea turtles and even clay — which also links to their Science learning!
It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity grow as they discover new facts and present them using the structure of an information report.

Year 2 News
What an exciting start Year 2 students have had this term! The first four weeks have been full of hands-on learning, curiosity and creativity. Here's an overview of what we’ve been working on in class so far:
English – We’ve jumped straight into informative writing this term, focusing on using facts to create interesting and informative texts about animals. Our recent zoo excursion provided the perfect spark for students to observe and gather real-life information, which they’ve been using to plan and write their own reports. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and growing confidence in organising ideas and writing for an audience.
Maths – In Maths, students have been exploring three-digit numbers, learning and applying strategies for addition and subtraction such as place value partitioning and vertical addition and subtraction. We've also introduced telling time to the nearest fifteen minutes and using calendars to track days, weeks and months. These skills are being developed through interactive learning and daily problem-solving.
Science - Our Science topic is all about life cycles. The big highlight so far has been the arrival of our silkworm eggs! We’re patiently observing them each day, learning about the stages of growth and making predictions about what will happen next. This real-life Science experience has the whole class excited and engaged.
HASS - In HASS, we’ve been exploring our connections to places both near and far. The students have loved singing the continent song and locating the continents on a world map. We've also introduced the concept of the equator and begun discussing how maps help us understand the world and our place in it.
STEAM - In STEAM, we’ve continued to explore basic algorithms by writing simple, clear instructions (great early coding skills!). In Visual Arts, students have been busy experimenting with a variety of mediums including paint, oil pastels, coloured pencils and collage. We’ve been focusing on expressing ideas and using different techniques to bring our artwork to life.
We are so proud of how well the students have settled in and engaged with their learning this term. We look forward to sharing more of their progress with you as the term continues.

Year 3 News
Year 3 Excursion to Australia Zoo
Our Year 3 students recently embarked on a memorable excursion to Australia Zoo. It was a fantastic day filled with learning, discovery, and fun. Throughout the day, students observed a variety of animals in their naturalistic habitats and explored different stages of the animals’ life cycles. Highlights of the day included attending informative talks on Quokkas and Echidnas, the unique experience of patting koalas and watching an engaging tiger show.
A particularly exciting moment was the shuttle bus journey to the Africa exhibit. Students enthusiastically sang songs, shared stories with fellow zoo visitors, and discussed the incredible animals they had seen. To finish off the day, everyone gathered for the thrilling Croc Show, where students from classes 3A and 3C proudly claimed victory in a friendly cheering competition, winning with their impressive enthusiasm.
This excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to consolidate and extend their learning from our Science unit Living and Non-Living Things. It also supported learning in other subject areas including Mathematics, HASS, Visual Arts, and English.
A big thank you to Australia Zoo for hosting such a wonderful day of learning and to all the Year 3 teachers and support staff for making the day so enjoyable and educational.
